Spirulina is a blue-green freshwater microalgae with an extremely high chlorophyll content, which has a positive effect on digestion and metabolism. It gets its name from its spiral shape.
It is around 100 times larger than other algae and its cells are often visible to the naked eye. Like chlorella, they have a very high content of plant proteins (up to 60-65%) and are complete proteins, i.e. they provide all 8 essential amino acids in the right proportions. Most plant proteins are not complete proteins as they lack 1 or more amino acids. Another advantage is that spirulina provides these amino acids in an easily digestible form so that they are not lost during digestion.
It is rich in vitamins (A, B and E), amino acids, minerals, trace elements (potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, manganese, iron and selenium) and enzymes and strengthens the immune system. It also contains vitamin B12, which is only found in very few plant foods, making it an ideal food for vegetarians.
Recommended intake: 2-3 teaspoons per day, mixed with tomato, apple or other fruit juices with a pronounced flavour.
